Graduate Spotlight
"When I first came to Hallmark I didn't know much about photography at all but all I did know is that I love photography and taking pictures. My experience being here was just so great; the teachers and equipment were just so great having around. The teachers are always there for you when you need them and they would also work with you on a one on one basis and that is just great on so many levels, so use the teachers as much as you can. The school has so much great equipment and you can't go wrong with all the equipment. I just enjoy working with the equipment and also learning all about it too. Now the end of the year Portfolio Review is one experience I will never forget; when you hear Lisa say 'Portfolio Accepted', it's the best feeling ever, but even when you hear that don't stop working on making your portfolio stronger. Being at Hallmark was just amazing."
Ganitte Adolphe, Class of 2011 - Florida ganitteadolphe.com "I made the right decision that February. I came to Hallmark almost in a state of desperation. A college graduate, 24 years old, no clear career ignited, and no fervor or clear direction. I followed my impulse, my heart; abandoned my ill-intentioned law plan and contacted Hallmark. One year ago, I read the comments on Graduate Spotlight in a state of doubtful amazement. They were ecstatic about their newly gained supreme skills, and most importantly a new found confidence about life in general! It was clear to me that I would be embarking on something life changing knowing quite well that's what I needed. Then, it all began in September. That first day, our guest speaker Clay Patrick McBride washed all the doubts I had away so refreshingly from my head. I related a lot to him, as he found himself in a place of desperation and hardship and shared his story of how photography changed him. He told us that all it took to reach his level was pure want and passion. Now I find myself reflecting, and confirming with my fellow alumni from the class of 2010, that I am ready to be somebody in the photography world. My passion is ignited. Its all the beginning though, without Hallmark I was lost, now I am pushing beyond belief to earn my place and I believe I will make my mark."
Pablo Aguilar, Class of 2011 - Texas photosbypablo.com "Coming to Hallmark was one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself. It has made me who I am today. I have had the privilege of spending time with some of the most talented and inspiring photographers that are the staff there who are nothing but dedicated to making you the best you can be, using top of the line equipment and facilities, and finding a home away from home. I am leaving school with the confidence to go out and find an amazing job knowing that I have an amazing educational background and the best training."
Dana Anderson, Class of 2011 - Kansas danapearlphotography.com "As a career changer, I took a leap of faith from a steady income to attend photography school full-time. My experience at Hallmark's rigorous 10 month program has successfully converted me from an amateur into a professional photographer. Hallmark provides state of the art facilities, equipment and a staff of amazing and dedicated teachers/photographers. This program far exceeded my expectations and I look forward to my venture into the portrait field armed with knowledge and experience. I remain enriched for always."
Judy Barrette, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts judybarrettephotography.com "My objective was to be completely confident in my ability to deliver consistent and meaningful work that would be respected and sought after in the market place. My Hallmark experience has helped me to clarify my creative vision, draw out my individual strength and to realize my value as a working photographer. My skills & techniques have been greatly refined thereby improving all of my photographic work. The Artist-in-Residence Program and the dynamic faculty at Hallmark Institute of Photography are second to none when it comes to delivering the promise of a new career in photography. You can find your place in the program no matter your age, background, or experience level.
Hallmark Institute of Photography delivered on their promise!"
Alan Bassett, Class of 2011 - Pennsylvania atbassett.com "After attending a mixture of four year colleges for anything from Interior Design to Pre Law, I decided to leave everything behind and pursue my real passion; photography. I consulted with my high school art teacher who was like a mom to me, and when I asked her about school options she simply said: 'If you want to be successful, Hallmark is THE place to go.' She was right. It gave me all the technical skills, business smarts and creative motivation I needed to push me into the working world of photography. It's been the hardest, best, most rewarding 10 months of my life and I would have it no other way."
Heather Bates, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts www.heatherbatesphotography.com "Once I graduated high school I started working and the idea of continuing my education got pushed to the wayside. Then a life changing battle with breast cancer changed my priorities. I decided to attend Hallmark Institute of Photography and pursue my passion for photography. It was absolutely the best decision of my life so far. The equipment we are able to use and the hands on curriculum provides an excellent way to learn. The staff is well engaged in their work and with helping the students, and the students help each other a lot. It is like a big family of people who have been a large part of my life and I will not soon forget."
Julie Bloniasz, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts julieannbloniasz.com "Changing careers as a wildlife biologist to a professional photographer was a big decision to make, but choosing the right photography school was easy. After researching several photography schools and talking to alumni, I knew that Hallmark was the right decision for me. Hallmark provided me with access to the best equipment and some of the best instructors.
My year at Hallmark has been one of the best educational experiences that I could have ever hoped for, leaving me with the confidence to apply my education towards virtually all aspects of the industry and succeed."
Michael Blount, Class of 2011 - Nebraska michaelblount.com "I came to Hallmark wanting to making photography my career. When I first got here I hardly knew anything about the field. I'm blown away with what the short 10 months has taught me. I feel confident to go out into the real world and make photography my life and career. Hallmark is one of a kind and a truly inspiring place for one to pursue their dreams."
Lindsay Bryant, Class of 2011 - Ohio lindsaybryantphotography.com "Before Hallmark I didn't know a lot about photography but enough to know that's what I want to be doing for the rest of my life. Going to Hallmark taught me how to be successful in business and give me the confidence to start my own business. I have seen a huge improvement in my photography because the teachers are there all the time to help you with your work. It has been a once in a lifetime experience for me and I would do it again."
Matt Burgett, Class of 2011 - Ohio www.matthewburgett.com "The first day of school I remember being told this year would be both the best and worst year of my life... truer words were never spoken."
Matt Burks, Class of 2011 - California burksproductions.com "I never thought moving to the middle of nowhere Massachusetts would change my life so much but it did. Hallmark really was the greatest decision of my life. I never had a solid career choice in mind until one day I found Hallmark online. I was researching different careers that I had in mind that I would like to pursue and once I saw Hallmark I was hooked. I knew I would do whatever it takes to get in. It took 3 years before I could actually make it happen but I couldn't be happier on the first day of school. The first moment I walked in the doors and actually saw it in person. Living in FL I had to trust the school and what it offered without actually seeing it and boy did they live up to their word. From the portrait and commercial studio to the amazing computers and equipment available for us everyday I was left speechless. Truly the best thing out of everything Hallmark offers if the staff. They are so dedicated to helping you become the best YOU can be and helping you find your own stamp in the world. They really care and want to help. From pulling out my hair to the crying like a baby to just saying no more they keep you going and never give up on you. For that I say Thank you Hallmark. You changed me into a better, stronger, more confident person and photographer. I will never forget the memories I made there."
Kayli Capetillo, Class of 2011 - Florida kaylicapetillophotography.com "Coming to Hallmark was the best decision I made because it has given me the opportunity to learn more about the different aspects of photography. I have made many new long lasting friendships while attending Hallmark. The instructors are very knowledgeable and very helpful in helping me through the Hallmark experience. The courses at Hallmark are hands-on and each student experiences the negative as well as the positive outcome of any given project assigned. After completing the ten month program my passion for photography has become stronger as I ever imagined. I would recommend Hallmark to anyone who is willing to work hard and pursue their dream."
Ashleigh Carter, Class of 2011 - Maryland
"My experience at Hallmark was far beyond what I expected, and I have achieved much more than I would have imagined. I never really grew up around photography too much at all. I knew nothing about any aspect of it, but always knew that I had some sort of passion for it. Never had I thought I would go to college and succeed, though the things I have accomplished while attending Hallmark are so remarkable that I have more hope for myself in the future. Even if I weren't to become a photographer, I would have still learned something from this school: 'Never doubt your heart'."
Jamal Carter, Class of 2011 - Ohio
"Breaking out of a community like Rochester where photography is what built up our city (Eastman Kodak) was really difficult. I got a lot of criticism for choosing a school that is out of state but I can confidently say Hallmark has been the best decision of my life so far. As cheesy as it may be, our teachers are just so outstanding...sometimes I still don't believe it's real. From day one they make us feel like we are important to them and that is so refreshing. I went to college before this and sat in rooms with 100 kids around me but just one teacher. There's just something so special about Hallmark that really can't be replicated...it's everything you expect it to be and some more on top of that. It's photography magic."
Shelby Clark, Class of 2011 - New York sixtyfourdegreesphotography.com "I came to Hallmark Institute of Photography at the age of 34 leaving behind a career, a home, and all my savings. In coming to Hallmark, my hope was to carve a new path in life that would lead me to that elusive 'something' I have always known existed within me. My goal was to create a portfolio that was unique and diverse within a specific category. For me that category was not fashion, weddings, or family portraits, although I am well prepared to photograph these events. My focus and passion is fly-fishing, and I have been able to produce a portfolio capable of propelling my career to the top of the industry. What more can I ask? I have honestly never been so proud in my life."
Nathan Ekis, Class of 2011 - New Hampshire nathanekis.com "I went from taking orders to making photos in ten months, and they're really good photos. Don't get me wrong, the price made me nervous, but it was worth every penny. The instructors and staff were amazing. And the amount I learned in that short while blows my mind. I could never take full credit. Its obvious I am petrified to leave the comfort of the endless equipment room and top notch software, but Hallmark has well prepared me."
Hannah Ferguson, Class of 2011 - New York hannahnicolephoto.com "I graduated with a BA in Photography and Ceramics ten years ago right when digital photography began to have a strong impact in the photography world. I found myself at a loss of how to learn all these skills to become a professional photographer in these days with only my skills of darkroom and film processing. I had shot only with film until I came to Hallmark. Hallmark has been an incredible experience for me and I truly feel like I am graduating with all the skills necessary to start my business and be successful. The school has taken me through an in depth process of learning all aspects of photography. At the beginning, the teachers shared with us to trust the process of these ten months and in the end we will have all gained an incredible amount of skills. This has been true, I am truly amazed at how I have grown with my work."
Heidi Ferguson, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts heidiferguson.com "My time at Hallmark has been the most priceless time of my life! The people there are amazing and there is nothing else on earth like it! Going into the school, I hadn't the slightest idea what I wanted to do with my photography. Wedding photography, table-top, photojournalism, it was all a blur to me. The faculty and staff at Hallmark laid each path out for me, one at a time. Not only did they help take my photography to the next level, but I'm leaving here with an awesome network of resources and a firm grip on the business!"
Garrett Fisher, Class of 2011 - Arizona crashindustries.com "Hallmark has easily been the best 10 months of my 19-year teenage life. It wasn't until my Junior year of high school when I discovered my love for image-making. It was fun, but then my Senior year rolled in and I realized I had no idea what I was going to do after graduation. At first I didn't even consider photography as a career option. I assumed that all photography programs had adopted the starving artist approach and would refuse to teach anything about how to make a living taking photos. But then I found Hallmark. I clicked the link to Hallmark's homepage and immediately thought it was a scam. A joke. There was no way that I had just stumbled upon a photography program that didn't care about high school GPAs and community service hours, and actually taught both the technical and business skills necessary to start a career in the photography industry. I submitted a Request Information form and realized after about two dozen persistent phone calls that Hallmark might actually be real. Fast-foward one year and here I am, graduating from the best photography school in the country with a kickass portfolio to help me land a job I didn't even know I could get paid for just one year ago. Hallmark taught me everything I needed to know about commercial photography at an incredibly fast pace, and without cutting corners."
Jeff Fitzgerald, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts jefffitz.com "Before coming to Hallmark I had a love for photography. Now, after going through the most intense/rewarding 10 months of my life I have a deep passion and great love for photography and all that goes into making each image. Hallmark has taught me more than I could ever learn anywhere else, I have grown stronger as an artist and an individual and can't wait for the next step."
Emily Gallagher, Class of 2011 - New Jersey aesthetikphotography.com "In the summer of 2010 I finally decided I needed to change my life and start a career doing something I loved, photography. After much debate with family and friends I decided it would be the best decision for me to come to Hallmark and endure the stressful ten month program. After starting classes in September I found out at the end of the month that I was pregnant and expecting my first baby May 31, 2011 coincidentally just a few days before final portfolio was due. With the help of the amazing instructors and staff at Hallmark I was able to finish my final portfolio before the baby came.
Not only did I have a great experience at an amazing school with great people and instructors, but with the encouragement from multiple staff members I was able to have a happy and healthy pregnancy too.
Coming to this school was the best decision of my life, I grew more than I could ever imagine and learned so much. Anyone questioning if they should attend Hallmark should defiantly do so. You learn more in ten months than you could in ten years and get to be surrounded by amazing teachers!
CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2011"
Ashley Gangi, Class of 2011 - New York ashleyrosegangiphotography.com "Hallmark Institute of Photography has given me, in a word, opportunity. This program has pushed me to my very limits, revealing that I can overcome anything if I work hard enough and have the passion for it. The instructors here give you every ounce of knowledge you will need to survive out in the real world of professional photography, and they really recognize your talent and try in every way to help that talent grow into the best that it can be. Hallmark has prepared me for every aspect of this business we are all diving into, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience at this time in my life."
Savanna Garr, Class of 2011 - Arizona savannagarr.com "Hallmark Institute of Photography was one of the best choices I have made in my life. Every one wants to graduate from Hallmark a better photographer; I think that everyone who does graduate is an amazing photographer. This school really exceeds my expectations in a photographic education. They have everything for us. Not only do they have the latest technology and equipment in the photo industry, but they have great instructors there to help us learn the equipment and the craft of photography. Through the photo field trips we take and the studio practicals, they make it their priority to help anyone become the best photographer they can be. I am proud of what I have accomplished in the 10 months that I have spent there, and I have graduated with the confidence and courage to go out and find a job in the field that I love, Photography."
Cole Garrett, Class of 2011 - California colegarrettphoto.com "Deciding to go to Hallmark was one of the best decisions of my life. I have learned more about life and photography then I ever could have expected. For the last ten months I have been surrounded with the most creative, fun, and interesting people. The teachers at Hallmark go above and beyond to make sure that every student gets the education they came to Hallmark for. Being a photographer has always been a dream of mine and now that I have come to Hallmark I can make that dream a reality. I can't wait to go out into the world to live my dream and I have everyone at Hallmark to thank for that!"
Rachel Girouard, Class of 2011 - Connecticut rachelgirouard.com "My experience at Hallmark exceeded my expectations. Over ten months I acquired the skills, techniques, and confidence to be a successful professional photographer. The bond of Hallmark students is not like any other. I know that the friendships I have made with my peers and instructors will last a lifetime. Although Hallmark was one of the most challenging experiences of my life, it was also one of the best."
Sarah Glenn, Class of 2011 - Arkansas sglennphotography.com "I can honestly say, as cheesy as it sounds, that the BEST decision I could have ever made, was to attend the 2011 Class of Hallmark Institute of Photography. I never really understood the idea of doing what you love for a living or even that it was really an option, until I looked into this school. The facilities may be what get you in the door at first, but the faculty and staff make this such an amazing adventure. After graduating from Hallmark, I believe whole heartedly that I can do what I love for the rest of my life and never look back at the "what ifs". I'm confident that Hallmark has prepared me for anything that can come my way in my photographic career and if not, I know that I can call the school at anytime and get the guidance I need even after I'm gone."
Karin Goodwin, Class of 2011 - Connecticut karingoodwinphotography.com "In 10 months I learned how to be a photographer. In 10 months I've learned so many ways to take a picture. In 10 months I learned many ways to light person and use natural light. In 10 month l've learn to create an image and make an image. In 10 months i've meet some amazing people and learned from extraordinary teachers that knew their craft. And I see the world in such a different way and i must say I like what I see. Hallmark best choice not doubt."
Jazmine Greene, Class of 2011 - Pennsylvania
"After ten long months I can honestly say my experience here is the best decision I could have ever made for myself and future business. Ten months ago I was working for a construction equipment company filing papers in a tiny warehouse office. Now I have successfully completed what was expected of me here at Hallmark and now I am officially a photography business owner. My skills as a photographer have taken a dramatic turn for the best, and I wouldn't have been able to do it all without the help of all the amazing instructors here. They are dedicated to what they do and their advice is priceless. Not to mention the facilities here are top of the line. I am entirely grateful for my experience here at Hallmark Institute of Photography and all the amazing new friends I have made along the way."
Ainsley Greenwood, Class of 2011 - Connecticut ainsleygreenwood.com "When I first visited Hallmark a year before attending, I was hooked! The facilities by far are some of the nicest and state of the art. I pondered furthering my photography career at a 4 year school, but Hallmark caught my attention by it's 10 month span. Within the ten months I learned way more than I ever thought I would. Hallmark not only teaches you the art of photography, it teaches you critical business skills that get you on your feet when you graduate. The staff of instructors are extremely supportive and are like a family to you, helping you become a member of the professional photography industry. Hallmark is dedicated to seeing you succeed in whatever field of photography you wish to aspire in!"
Jeff Hamm, Class of 2011 - Connecticut jeffhammphoto.com "I inquired about Hallmark when I decided I wanted to make a living from photography. Luckily, once I made that initial phone call they wouldn't leave me alone! I'm so glad their persistence pushed me to check out the school because once I did, I knew my life was going to change. One year later, I'm confident in my abilities as a photographer and plan on assisting in New York City in the fall. Coming to Hallmark was the single most important decision I've made in my life."
Jeff Harmon, Class of 2011 - Maine jefferyharmonphotography.com "Without the amazing staff and wonderful students at Hallmark I wouldn't have made it this far. It has truly been an experience that has changed my life in such a positive way and affected me greatly. The knowledge that I have gained from being at Hallmark Institute of Photography is unlike any other school, the instructors go beyond to help you become more advanced in your career. Here you don't learn from the 'average' college professor, you learn from real photographers who have and still are making great livings in this business but not only do you gain knowledge for photography, you also get design and business advice!
Words from me: It does take a camera to capture an image, a simple click and it's done. But it takes a photographer to make a portrait, adjust lights and camera settings, pose the subject, design a great look to capture the perfect moment that everyone will love!"
Shasta Hill, Class of 2011 - Michigan shastahillphotography.com "My time at Hallmark Institute of Photography has been an amazing and life-changing road. Hallmark pushed me to gain the confidence and skills that I needed to become a professional photographer. I would not trade my experience at Hallmark for anything."
Rick Holbrook, Class of 2011 - Virginia rickholbrookphotography.com "Coming to Hallmark has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I never dreamed of how much I could learn in just ten short months. The instructors at Hallmark are so friendly and always willing to help and encourage you. I can honestly say that I feel better equipped and ready to go out into the photography world. I would definitely recommend Hallmark to anyone with an interest or who wants to pursue it as a career. It may be an intense program, but you will come out a better and stronger person, having gone through the program. Hallmark changed me and I believe I will never be the same again!"
Heather Holleger, Class of 2011 - Delaware heatherholleger.com "Freelancing and being self-taught in photography can only take you so far, but after coming across Hallmark Institute of Photography - dreams become reality. I still remember, almost a year ago when I was preparing myself to fly down to begin my course for photography, I came to unlearn what I had learned and learn what was going to be taught by the incredible and dedicated faculty. These 10 months have been intensive - but I can proudly say that I have made the best decision of my life. I truly believe, if your passion is photography, Hallmark will show you the light at the end of the tunnel, but it can only happen if you are willing to push yourself beyond the boundaries of imagination. The luxury of using top of the line equipment and getting access to organized studios and gaining knowledge by the respected staff will be cherished. This has truly been an enriching and memorable experience of a life-time and has opened the doors to a better future in photography."
Salamat Husain, Class of 2011 - India salamatt-husain.com "When I first came here I didn't know what to expect. It was a 10 month intensive course with amazing instructors, the best facilities and the best equipment. Coming to Hallmark has been the best thing I've ever done. Being far away from home wasn't a big deal because I had the chance to meet amazing people and the staff made me feel like I was at home. I knew it was going to be hard but now I know it was worth it, I improved my professional skills and now I'm more confident and I can go into the world of photography with the knowledge and competence I need. Hallmark? the best choice I've ever done!!"
Alessandro Ielacqua, Class of 2011 - Italy alessandroielacqua.com "Hallmark has a great facility, an amazing and intense program, and the best instructors. However Hallmark has taught me much more than what I needed to be a professional photographer. It's taught me how to have confidence in my abilities, trust people, and given me the opportunity to meet some people that I know will be friends for life. If you want to be a professional photographer this is the place to make it happen."
Kevin Jesmain, Class of 2011 - New York kevinjesmainphotography.com "Hands down attending the 10 months at Hallmark Institute of Photography has been the best and hardest experience of my life so far. Hallmark has changed how I look at and look for photographs in every possible way. Before Hallmark my photographs were good, I was taking a photography course my freshman year of college but I knew there was more to learn, I saw the light but didn't understand the light to the best of my ability and Hallmark has opened my mind and eyes to what truly makes a photograph. Hallmark has prepared me to embark on an amazing career in photography and gave me the understanding and the tools to making the career last. Not to mention Hallmark has forced me to face my fears of public speaking, thank you Shelley Nicholson. The Faculty at Hallmark is outstanding and they are really here for you and helping you get everything you need from the program they are just as invested in your education as you are. You are surrounded by amazing visionary souls for ten months and when you exit the program you are seriously changed.
Thank you Hallmark Institute of Photography for helping me become the photographer I am, I couldn't have done it without you."
Sabrina Jones, Class of 2011 - Vermont sabrinajayphotography.com "I have never been surrounded by people and beautiful energy daily. This is the best choice I've made by coming here and learning about art, photography, people, personalities and most importantly what hard work is and that is something I will take with me where ever I go. If I could do it again I would in a heartbeat. I've never been so proud of myself and I've never seen people work so hard including the staff."
Maja Jutanda, Class of 2011 - New Hampshire majajutanda.com "Hallmark offers those who love the world of photography the fundamental base to emerge as professionals and artists. The program and the experience will test you in every way possible. However, the confidence and knowledge you leave with is invaluable to succeeding as a professional photographer. During my time here I've been exposed to amazing works of photography. I've watched my fellow students grow and develop into powerful artists. To witness artistic growth is like watching a forest grow, its truly beautiful."
Kourtney Katanich, Class of 2011 - Florida nichphotography.com "Before I came to hallmark I thought I was a lost cause, but being here I learned more than I could have ever imagined. The staff are amazing people to be around and they're always willing and pushing you to be better at photography. I am leaving here with skills I wouldn't have gotten anywhere else and an experience that you have to live to understand."
Taylor Kemp, Class of 2011 - Connecticut taylorkempphotography.com "21 years ago I was in love with photography. Upon entering university along with my main courses of study I took several photography courses for a year or so. But over time, the dark room became a place of memory. Years went by and I found myself in low-level management positions for a number of international companies, all the time feeling a little out of place, knowing I should be doing something different. In early 2009, a wonderful thing happened; I was laid off. Knowing that it would be wrong just to find another job, I took a year off to travel and think about my career. While traveling I found myself, camera in hand, creating images, having a great time. Then it hit me, why not do this for a living? In short order while living out of my backpack, I applied, interviewed, and was accepted by Hallmark.
Having racked up a number of advanced degrees over the years I have had numerous instructors. I can say with absolute confidence that the faculty at Hallmark are the most dedicated people to teaching I've had the pleasure to learn from. Having no interest in spending 2-4 years at a school (having already gone down that path) the 10 month program was a perfect fit for me. The program itself has been meticulously planned but at the same time it's agile enough to adjust on the fly in response to trends in the photography marketplace.
Hallmark provides you with everything you need (facilities, equipment, training, and yes, pressure) to learn and succeed. Finishing the program I feel confident I could walk into any studio on the planet and start to work."
Tim Kerr, Class of 2011 - Washington kerrmit.com "Coming to Hallmark Institute of Photography has been one of the best experiences of my life. The program has helped me develop into a stronger photographer. It's amazing how much information you learn in only ten months. I feel like I can enter the photography world with confidence."
Jacquelyn Kolosow, Class of 2011 - Pennsylvania jacquelynkolosow.com "Before going to Hallmark Institute of Photography, I owned a little Nikon D40 and had this strange passion for taking photographs. Certain things in our world spoke to me in ways at the the time, maybe even now I still don't completely understand. I knew very little about the field I was so interested in, and that became very apparent when I first started school here.
I used to wonder if I would ever be able to make it through a year at Hallmark, that I would never be at a professional level. But that quickly all changed due to the amazing staff members at the school, who wake up everyday and pour their hearts and souls into their work. They always make time to meet, are eager to teach, and by far the most amazing people I've ever met in my life. Because of them, I no longer feel that doubt, because of them I can truly call myself a professional photographer.
And now, I am pursuing the commercial field of product photography and design. The term "normal", doesn't apply to the realm of commercial photography, because there is nothing normal about it. Flawless skin, gleaming products, vibrant dresses, gateway eyes, and so on. Strangely enough, that is what has always drawn me to commercial work, I live for the fantasy that is constantly generated, and I work to create my own."
Brian Kotosky, Class of 2011 - Connecticut briankotoskyphotography.com "Through this experience I have truly found myself. At first I was self-conscious and didn't think I was at the level as my fellow classmates were and I thought it made my work inferior to theirs. But I realized while as I was creating my final portfolio that I had to be myself and photograph people they way I see them; happy, cheerful, emotional human beings. Hallmark has definitely given me exactly what I came for and more, but most importantly, confidence. Not just with technical skills but also in business and financing. I am so driven now to start my business as soon as I get home to North Carolina as a portrait photographer and I wouldn't have gotten here without the support of my faith, family, friends, classmates, teachers and the new strength I have found in myself while going through this process."
Chelsea Krahenbill, Class of 2011 - North Carolina chelseakrahenbill.com "After completing high school, and after three indecisive years contemplating what financially irreversible future was worth directing the majority of my remaining academic energy towards, I discovered Hallmark and a newfound love for photography. Just two Christmases ago I was gifted my first camera, and soon after found myself studying and documenting the life of a very small community of insects and flowers residing in my back yard. Finally I had found something worth leaving my computer screen for. Not a day into my search for educational facilities I stumbled upon the website for Hallmark Institute of Photography. It was there I made the arrangements to visit the school and to forever alter my course through the deep sea that is time and space. Soon after my visit and application process, I received a letter in the mail affirming my acceptance into the school. In a blur of ignorance and naivety, I assembled my belongings and shipped on out to Turners Falls Massachusetts, unaware of the tried and true education that awaits. Upon initial entry I found myself not unlike a lone sheep, formerly astray but now joining my long lost flock and shepherds. It was then and there that the furtherance of my journey into the world of photography began. After what seemed like only 10 short calendar months but an eternity of knowledge and determination I emerged, a true photographer. Now with a substantially higher level of self-confidence, an expansive knowledge of all things photography and priceless new relationships with great people who share the same passion and heartfelt appreciation, I begin the next phase of my life; with more vehemence than ever before."
Dom Lavin, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts
"I came here and I had no idea what I got myself in to. Hallmark changed my personal and professional life for ever, in ways that I can't put in words. I cannot thank enough all the amazing and incredibly talented teachers that guided me throughout the entire 10 months. Although it was a challenging experience, I got to take my photography to another level, I made friends that became family, and I learned a lot from every single day even the not so good ones."
Mayela Lopez, Class of 2011 - Mexico
"After graduating from Hallmark, I now have the knowledge to complete a job without worry. I knew nothing about lighting patterns or posing before attending the school. The knowledge gained was a dream come true."
Jared Lowery, Class of 2011 - Georgia jaredlowery.com "I would never regret the decision that I made to come to Hallmark Institute. This has been 10 amazing months of hard work but also great experiences. I can say it had been a long time since I laughed so much!!!. Not only has Hallmark improved my photography; it has also changed me as a person.
Being surrounded by so many professional instructors and world renowned photographers is what makes Hallmark Institute stand out from other photography schools."
Emma Lozano, Class of 2011 - Mexico
"Hallmark was a great experience for me and gave me the chance to meet new friends and gain a new family. If I could do it all over again, I would."
Shalaylay Manley, Class of 2011 - Connecticut
"What can I say.... I now can see. I now see the world in a new light, in a new way with color, light and shadow. I now can envision my dreams, they are my new reality. Before Hallmark I took pictures, as I leave I understand now I make photographs. The view finder into my mind's eye has been discovered so I can now see the world around me differently with the guidance and careful crafting from the instructors here. My life will never be the same. Thank you Hallmark."
Jimmy Mathis, Class of 2011 - Vermont jimmymathisphotography.com "I turned my cant's into cans and my dreams into plans and attended The Hallmark Institute of Photography. Hallmark gave me the strength and knowledge to become the photographer I am today. Although there were days I wanted to give up, the instructors pushed me to my limits which gave me the confidence to enter the photography world successfully. With my family and friends support these past ten months, I am happy to say I am a graduate of Hallmark's intense program. Without a doubt, this was the best decision I have made thus far in my life."
Lauren Matteo, Class of 2011 - Connecticut laurenmatteophotography.com "My time at Hallmark was the worst and best year of my life. The intensity of the program really challenged me and there were several times I didn't think I had made the right decision about attending the school. A huge part of what kept me going was the dedication & sincerity of the teachers. They were helpful, supportive & caring but they never stopped pushing me to reach my potential.
The friends I meet while at Hallmark I consider to be my family. We took this journey together and the bonds that were made will last a lifetime. I will be forever grateful for this experience."
Melayna Matteo, Class of 2011 - Connecticut
"Before I started attending Hallmark, I had no plan or idea of what it was I wanted to do with my life. Growing up I was always around the arts because my dad is in the industry, so I at least knew I wanted to do something art related. It was actually because of my dad that I heard about Hallmark. I still wasn't sure if Photography was what I wanted to go into though, so I attended community college for a year and hated it. I've always been more of a graphic person, having trouble expressing myself through words. Hallmark has given me the ability to channel the ideas and things I see in my head into living images for others to be able see as well."
Taylor McDonnell, Class of 2011 - New York taylormcdonnell.com "Coming to Hallmark was the best decision I have ever made for myself. The skills and knowledge I have gained here will be with me forever. The faculty and staff are very helpful and are there every step of the way. I think they want to see you do as best as you can more than you actually want yourself to do. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for Hallmark and it's staff."
Shannon Mescall, Class of 2011 - Florida www.shannonmescallphotography.showitsite.com "My experience here has been one of the greatest experiences of my life thus far. I couldn't have asked for better faculty and staff to guide me along the way. I have been taught more here then I could have ever imagined I would in just ten very short months. Not only did they give me photographic knowledge but they gave me the confidence to be able to do just what I want in life, be a PROFESSIONAL photographer. It has been crazy and chaotic but I would not change one thing about it. Hallmark is the only of its kind."
Ashley Mills, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts
"Being a part of Hallmark was the best choice I made for my future. In just ten months I found new inspiration, motivation and creativity that will help me pursue my passion in photography."
Abby Morton, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts
"Hallmark really has been the best decision of my life so far. I've loved photography since I was 9 years old and Hallmark has boosted my love, passion, and drive for it. I know photography will be my career for the rest of my life. The whole 10 months was a great experience but Phase IV was my favorite. The reviews were an amazing experience but the best was how all my classmates really came together and were there for each other during final portfolio time. The teachers are some of the best people I've met, they're passionate about teaching and truly want to see you succeed. It really is like a big family. I wouldn't change anything and I'm very thankful for my time at Hallmark. They didn't just make me a better photographer but a better person."
Brittany Nelson, Class of 2011 - Indiana brittanynelsonphotography.com "Hallmark was the best decision I ever made. It's a place where you are really able to come into your own and learn everything you've always wanted to learn about photography. It's like being a part of your own culture; no one else other than the students or teachers here will ever speak the same language you do."
Kelsey Nelson, Class of 2011 - Colorado
"Investing in my photographic education was an important decision for me in my life. I knew a career in photography was what I wanted and that Hallmark Institute of Photography was the best school for me. I could go on and on about how amazing the facilities are and the top of the line equipment available, but the truth is without these instructors, everything else is worthless. I am blown away by the support and individual instruction I received, and the time and effort they gave to my education. It's been an incredible ten months, and I'm leaving Hallmark with confidence to make a special career in photography."
Billy Orr IV, Class of 2011 - Connecticut www.billyorr.com "Hallmark has been a wonderful experience and the best decision I made to enhance my photography knowledge. Prior to joining Hallmark I was a self taught photographer. I come from a family of pioneering and award winning photographers in Sri Lanka. However I wanted to learn the basics and advanced techniques to be a trained professional in the market and be able to produce world class images. The technical and business sides of the program helps you to learn the industry really well. The instructors are truly exceptional. Dedicated, caring and knowledgeable.
The intense program requires you to be on top of your game from day one till you graduate. I have gained the knowledge, confidence, experience, and the skill set needed to succeed in today's world of photography."
Prishan Pandithage, Class of 2011 - Sri Lanka prishan.com "Coming to Hallmark has been the best decision I have ever made. I always knew I wanted to make a career out of photography but never knew how to go about it. When I first came across Hallmark's website I knew right away that this was the perfect place for me. Going into the 10 month program, I knew that it would be intense but I had no idea what to expect. I was blown away by the professionalism of the facilities, equipment, and the instructors. The instructors dedication to all the students is unlike anything I've ever experienced. They make Hallmark feel like 'home' and I just want to say thank you for making my Hallmark experience the best it possibly could be. I can definitely say that I am ready for the real world of photography."
Felicia Pascarella, Class of 2011 - Connecticut feliciapascarella.com "Making the decision to come to Hallmark was the best. I have loved it here before I was even accepted. Since the first day sitting in the auditorium I knew that my life would be changed and this was the best decision. The school has the best equipment and the instructors are phenomenal! With out them and their help I would not have the confidence I need to make myself and my photography ready for the world. I know a lot more then I did before I came to Hallmark. If you are serious about photography Hallmark is the answer."
Justine Pelletier, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts justinepelletierphotography.com "When you are leaving everything to go after a dream you want to make sure you pick the right place. No doubt Hallmark was the right place for me. It transformed my vision, gave me the right technical skills, but more importantly it built the confidence to go out and pursue a career as professional photographer. Hallmark is full of passion, talent, incredible equipment and the most awesome people to help you develop your craft. These 10 months were everything I expected and more."
Mariana Perera, Class of 2011 - Venezuela marianaperera.com "Hallmark was always my dream. It was this or nothing. It was the best decision of my life. Hallmark was an amazing 10 months. It was intense but I learned so many new and great things. My passion for photography grew here so much. I couldn't imagine life at any other school but this one!"
Ceara Poulin, Class of 2011 - New York cearapoulinphotography.com "I loved my 10 months here. School was amazing. I got to experience 20 inches of snow for the first time in my life. The field trips were so fun. The faculty is caring and helpful. I have made amazing friends."
Natalee Raymond, Class of 2011 - Texas
"I looked around at several photography schools before finding Hallmark. Once I found Hallmark there was no more comparing; I had found the perfect school for me. When I came to Hallmark I finally understood why. The facilities are the top of the line, as they teach you on the best equipment in the industry. The curriculum is tough, but the instructors are with you every step of the way and they really want you to succeed and do everything they can to see that happen. I have never seen a staff of teachers as dedicated to the students than the ones at Hallmark. They really care about our success and do whatever they can to see us succeed. I am so happy that I chose to come to Hallmark."
Madalyn Reeves, Class of 2011 - Oklahoma itslamour.com "I have never learned so much in so little time! My time at hallmark has been a big highlight in my life, and has set me up to do the thing I love, photography; as a career!!"
Ted Reidarson, Class of 2011 - California tedcraig.com "After coming to Hallmark I feel prepared to go out and start my own business. The 10 month course is intense but if you really are passionate about photography it seems more calm than others say. I wish the program was longer so we could continue having the best of the best equipment to use and the help of other students and teachers."
Justin Reinert, Class of 2011 - Pennsylvania justinrpictures.com "After a mission trip to Haiti, where I captured my first images on a borrowed Kodak point-and-shoot camera, I knew I wanted to create pictures that would impact not only the people around me, but the world. In pursuit of a new passion and direction I found Hallmark, which can be compared to none for its staff, facilities, and education. I feel that Hallmark has given me the technical skill, knowledge, and confidence I'll need to enter the world as a true professional photographer making powerful images."
Scott Richard, Class of 2011 - Louisiana scottrichardphotography.com "Hallmark is a very rigorous program. Being only a week from graduation as I write this, I can't say I've ever been this tired for this long. It was difficult for me to hang in there, but it is downright euphoric to be where I am now. I'm at the beginning of a new life with an entirely new set of possibilities to explore, both artistically and professionally.
The faculty is a very talented ensemble cast of people with a wealth of experience and a heartfelt commitment to teaching. I felt accepted and encouraged. The student culture was one in which we trusted and helped each other. I am so relieved to have made it to graduation, and so excited about the projects that beckon to me, but I will really miss my teachers and fellow students."
Elizabeth Robertson, Class of 2011 - Connecticut elizabethrobertsonphotos.carbonmade.com "Before attending to Hallmark, I was a 24 year old with a BFA, working a part-time job. I needed something to excite me. Hallmark did just that, and more. It is honestly the best decision I have made thus far. Not only do you get to use the most up-to-date equipment with amazing faculty by your side, but you are pushed to become a better photographer, a better business person... a better you."
Corinne Saul, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts corinnesaul.com "Hallmark was a life changing experience for me. From the incredibly dedicated staff and instructors, state of the art equipment, to all of the wonderful friends I made throughout the program. I learned so much more than I ever thought I could, about photography and about myself. They have given me the professional know-how, photography skills, and the confidence to go out into the real world and make a living in photography. Hallmark was an experience that pushed me to be the best person I could possibly be, and I will never forget the time that I had here."
Allison Sepanek, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts allisonsepanek.com "From psychology to photography.
That's the path I've taken my whole life. As a high school sophomore, I had the idea to be a photographer. Then my confidence faltered, and I decided to go into a career in psychology. After 2 years and 2 different 'traditional' colleges, I took a year off. I was not doing what I truly loved, and I knew I wanted, needed, a change. I finally got up the nerve to look into a photographic career, and the Google search brought up Hallmark. The phone call I made was the best thing I could have done. I walked into Hallmark as a 20 year old with no real knowledge of photography and very little confidence. 10 short months later, I walked out a confident 20 year old businesswoman with a complete knowledge for professional photography. I remember having a Portfolio Conference, having instructor Rich Barnes look me in the eye and tell me 'You're not very confident in your work, are you?'. I almost cried, because he absolutely hit a bulls-eye about how I had been feeling. After that conference, I knew I could really count on the instructors to back up my talents. And they still do, even after graduation.
Seriously, Hallmark doesn't teach photography. It teaches life. How to be confident, love yourself & your work, and how to work with other amazing people. Currently, I'm working as a professional portrait & wedding photographer in Western Massachusetts. I'm a small business owner, and a proud alumnus of Hallmark Institute of Photography."
Heidi Shartrand, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts nothingfadesphotography.com "My time at Hallmark cannot be summed up in just one paragraph. What you go through to get where you want to be by June 1st changes who you ever thought you were. The person you become after the ten months, THAT is who you really are. Personally, through all the hardships, sleepless nights & coffee runs, I am very glad that I picked Hallmark to apply at & am sure as hell happy they picked me to be a student there as well. If I was told to sum up my experience at Hallmark in just a few words I would say it was the bees knees."
Lisa Marie Shaver, Class of 2011 - Illinois vonfoxtrotstudios.com "Hallmark has been a crazy, scary, stressful, fun, impossibly difficult, amazing journey, and I wouldn't change it for anything. I have learned SO much in the last ten months, and I have met some very amazing people. The instructors at Hallmark have been AMAZING and I cannot even begin to express how grateful I am to have learned from such accomplished professionals. They went beyond just being professionals, though, and they really got to know us and try to help us in the best way they knew how. I have also made some amazing friends that I know will carry on past this Hallmark experience. I am so glad that I decided to come to this school, no matter how many people told me I shouldn't. Now I can go and pursue my DREAM and make a living doing something I love to do, every single day. How many people can say that!? :) Thank you to all of the instructors and classmates for making this experience so amazing."
Heather Shulack, Class of 2011 - New Jersey heathershulack.com "I knew that coming to Hallmark was the right choice to make, but I could never imagine how rewarding the experience would be. In only ten months, I was taken to a level that I didn't even know was possible. I have grown so much with my photography and it wouldn't have been possible without the wonderful resources this Institute has to offer. Hallmark carries all the best equipment in the industry, and the dedication and ethic of the staff is truly incredible. It was so refreshing to be in an environment where everyone is immersed in photography all the time. I confidently leave Hallmark with a true understanding of the business and with friendships that will last forever. I'm ready to hit the ground running!"
Molly Sittner, Class of 2011 - New York mollyrosephotography.viewbook.com "The training I received at Hallmark has been amazing. After ten months I feel confident to call myself a professional photographer. It has been very intense and I gave blood, sweat and tears during the year. And as a career-changer, I often wondered what the heck I'd done. But as my images began to improve I realized that no matter what, there was no turning back.
You have to be ready to let go and believe in the program and the instructors. They are the best in the industry. Through Hallmark's lecture series, I was able to talk with with some of the worlds most notable photographers, like Sam Abel and Jay Maisel just to name a few. In my opinion, there is no other photography school that will provide you with this training and experience. I made friends for life and will begin a career I'm passionate about."
Joyce Skowyra, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts www.joyceskowyraphotography.com "I came to Hallmark fresh out of high school with hardly any experience in photography. The first time I visited the school I was completely blown away and I knew immediately that it was the place for me. The staff really set my expectations for the school high when they sat down with me and told me what I could expect from the program and all the top notch equipment I was going to be taught to use. And at the end of those ten, long, intense months I learned that Hallmark was even more amazing than I could have imagined, it truly exceeded my expectations and never once let them down. Not only did I learn more than I ever thought possible about photography, but I made relationships that will last me a lifetime. Every instructor at this school is so supportive and helpful, you really know that they want you to do well and succeed and they'll do anything they can to help you do so. If it wasn't for Hallmark I would have never learned so much so fast and truly found my real passion in photography. I grew so much in every way over the ten months I was there and I could never thank all my instructors enough for their help. It truly is an incredible journey that I will always look back on and smile about."
Rikki Snyder, Class of 2011 - New York rikkisnyder.com "Ever since the day I found out about the Hallmark Institute of Photography midway through my sophomore year of high school, I was hooked. I went through every page of the website, every image gallery I could find, and attended as many open houses as I could get to. I was blown away, and knew that this was the place for me. It was the only college I even applied to. And now, looking back on the past ten months, I know that I made the right choice. They make up both the toughest and the most rewarding year of my life. My year at Hallmark was absolutely everything I could have hoped for and more. I have grown and developed in so many ways, and overcome so much more than I thought I could. Now, at just eighteen years old and only a year out of high school, I'm ready to head out into the world and begin my career as a professional photographer. After all that I've gone through and overcome this year, I feel like I can take on anything. And I plan on doing just that."
Dana Starbard, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts danastarbard.com "When I first starting looking at Hallmark I had no idea what it was. I had no idea that it was the best photography school in the country, I had no idea that people from all over the world travel to Turners Falls, MA to learn here, and I had no idea that it would change my life. When I applied I wasn't even sure if I wanted to go. My mind was set on getting a bachelors degree, but I went to orientation anyway and found it was everything I wanted and needed. I was a film and photography major at a traditional college before coming to Hallmark and I would have never learned in four years as much as I did in ten months here. Best decision of my life. For ten months my life was nothing but photography and I have loved every minute of it. It is an intense program but the teachers are by your side every step of the way. They are always there to help the students with their photos, sometimes for long hours. I have seen my work improve through every phase here at Hallmark. Not only that, I have learned how to get my work out there and run a business. Not to sound too cheesy, but I now feel confident to pursue my dreams. I am going to miss Hallmark and I am so thankful that I found it."
Natalie Tacke, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts natalietackephotography.com "At first I wasn't sure I wanted to be at Hallmark or that it was the right place for me. It took months for me to realize that attending Hallmark Institute of Photography has been one of the best experiences of my life. I had never been in a school where all of the instructors and staff are so dedicated and encouraging. Even though they have a new set of students every year for only ten months they all really care about you. They want you to excel. With such devoted instructors and staff you almost don't need the state of the art facilities and equipment. I have learned so much in the past ten months, more than I thought possible, and I now feel capable and confident enough to start on my career in photography."
Leah Taylor, Class of 2011 - Florida leahtaylorphotography.com "I can't imagine what my technical skills would be like if I never chose Hallmark. Hallmark has an excellent way of teaching all the technical things you need along with many other important techniques that you will need out in the real world. The instructors are incredible and make Hallmark just that much better. I've also made friends here that I will have for a long time. Hallmark was one of the best times and my best decision by far."
Abigail Thibodeau, Class of 2011 - Maine abithibodeauphotography.com "I have to say that I do not recommend Hallmark, at least not to everyone. I would only do so to the people who are committed and passionate about photography. The experiences at Hallmark have become some of the best moments of my life. To have loved photography for so long, to have struggled for almost 15 years trying to take pictures and finally arriving at a place and in 10 months come out the other side making, not taking pictures is something only Hallmark can offer. It is not easy, although, you the student has to put 100%, like in many things in life you get back what you put in."
Luis Tobian, Class of 2011 - Colombia www.luistobian.com "The time spent at Hallmark has made me grow as a person. I've learned plenty about the industry, the equipment, and everything I never thought I would know."
Sarah Vincunas, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts www.saravincunas.com "I looked at Hallmark 6 years before it was the right time for me to enroll. It was a long road to get here, spanning most of the globe, and so worth the wait and the miles. The facilities and equipment are second to none, but what makes the school are the instructors. I'll miss the instructors even more than all the amazing gear. I can't believe how far we've come and how much we learned in this short year. Leaving, I know I have the skills necessary to be successful wherever I want to be and in whatever I want to do. When you commit to life at Hallmark, you commit to ten of the best months of your life--and possibly a caffeine addiction!"
Megan Walton, Class of 2011 - Iowa megwalton.com "I came to Hallmark as a working photographer wanting to take my work to the next level. From the amazing photographic minds to the industry standard equipment and a parade of top name photographers who spoke for the Guest Lecturer Series the resources available in these walls are staggering. The program is truly designed to find what motivates you as a photographer and how best to market your skill set after school."
Sean Welch, Class of 2011 - Wisconsin seanwelchphotos.com "It would have been impossible to accomplish everything I have this past year without Hallmark. The knowledge I have gained is incredible. Before coming, I knew close to nothing about the technical side of being a photographer. Hallmark gave me the opportunity to learn what I needed to know and so much more. The staff genuinely cares about each person going through the program and the people you meet along the way become your extended family. It is definitely an experience I won't ever forget!"
Carli Wentworth, Class of 2011 - Oklahoma carliwentworth.com "The day I came to Hallmark I knew I was going to love every day from that moment on. In ten months I gained confidence, life-long friends and mentors. With the amazing staff and facilities, Hallmark has helped me create work that I believe in, and the confidence to build a career in doing something I love."
Natasha Wilson, Class of 2011 - Arizona deanastaciaphoto.viewbook.com "Hallmark's program is intense yet rewarding. I have never had better teachers and better friends in my whole life. Being a part of a dynamic learning environment for 10 months boosted my personal and professional growth. Hallmark turned me into a photographer with a point of view and a goal - I plan to focus on conceptual portraiture and book illustration."
Anya Zelenkova, Class of 2011 - New York www.anyazelenkova.com "When the desire to make my passion of photography a career grew too strong to ignore, I began my search to find the school that would help me reach my goal. Although I took some time to research schools across the country I knew all along that where I needed to go was nowhere. The program that would give me the best opportunity was right in my backyard, my hometown of Turners Falls. The facilities and equipment here at Hallmark are unmatched, but for me it was the knowledge and dedication of our instructors that has been vital in preparing me to enter the photography industry with confidence."
Derrick Zellmann, Class of 2011 - Massachusetts www.derrickzellmann.com "The decision to attend Hallmark was a more than 2-yr. process. I asked questions, read the catalog, talked to alumni, talked to professionals in the field, sought out the advice of those close to me, and then finally felt as though I was making the right step. Hallmark's dedication to its mission and attention to what's cutting edge in the industry are just two of the many high points. There are other things I could have been doing with this last year of my life, but choosing to come to Hallmark is yet another marker in my life, one that is full of making memories, meeting wonderful people, and furthering my education in an art that I see myself doing for many years to come. Could I have said the same without having had the Hallmark experience? Sure. Would I trade these last 10 months for it? Not a chance. I am so grateful to Hallmark for giving me the tools I need to launch my photography business, and for the professionalism that is unparalleled in this industry."
