At Hallmark University, we take pride in the achievements of our students, and today, we are thrilled to introduce IT student, Billy Orellana. Billy is a retired veteran who served ten years in the military, splitting his time between the Marine Corps and the Army. Realizing that he needed a change for his family, Billy turned to his brother-in-law for suggestions. This led him to Hallmark University, where he has been a cybersecurity student for nearly two and a half years. Billy will earn his degree in December, 2024.
Billy’s education at Hallmark University has been a cornerstone of his professional development. From introductory courses to advanced networking, different aspects of the curriculum have equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary for the cybersecurity field. Billy highlights the hands-on experience he gained through the Cyber Eagles club, where students participate in capture-the-flag exercises and real-world scenarios, applying what they’ve learned in class.
Billy’s journey took an exciting turn when he secured an internship at the City of San Antonio’s ARSOC. This opportunity came after a rigorous selection process where he was one of two students chosen from a pool of eight applicants. The internship has been transformative, providing Billy with invaluable real-world experience and the chance to work alongside seasoned analysts.
On his first day, Billy was introduced to a wealth of knowledge, but thanks to his certifications in Network+, Security+, and ISC2, he was able to keep up with the fast pace. His time at the ARSOC has not only honed his technical skills but also instilled a greater sense of responsibility, as his work directly impacts the security of the network.
Billy’s immediate goal is to pass his upcoming CCNA and PenTest+ exams, further enhancing his qualifications in cybersecurity. Looking ahead, he aspires to continue serving his country and is committed to making a significant impact in the field of cybersecurity.
For new students entering Hallmark University, Billy offers the following advice: “Stay hungry, ask questions. And whatever you do don’t give up because before you know it the two and a half years are going to fly by and you’re going to be graduating.” Billy’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with determination, hard work, and the right educational support.
We wish him nothing but success in all his future endeavors!
