Students and Faculty from the School of Nursing Participate in Active Shooter Response Training
Students and faculty from Hallmark University’s School of Nursing participated in San Antonio’s mass casualty training exercise this last week. The San Antonio Mass Casualty Exercise and Evaluation (SAMCEE) is designed to assess the capabilities of hospitals and emergency agencies in the city. The Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council (STRAC) holds events like SAMCEE annually to evaluate the effectiveness of current emergency response plans and to detect any necessary improvements needed. Nearly 700 volunteers and role-players participated as victims, friends, and family members to test the capabilities of San Antonio’s emergency preparedness and response protocols.
Students, staff, and faculty of Hallmark University’s School of Nursing were dressed in makeup to give the appearance of various wounds found in an active shooter scenario and were staged in different areas of the Freeman Coliseum. Members from the San Antonio Fire Department, Police Department, and local hospitals executed their response plans as a real scenario.
Hallmark University students and faculty have previously volunteered as triage patients for a mock aviation disaster. Hallmark provided its 727 aircraft for use in a staged plane at the San Antonio International Airport, which required an immense and swift emergency response.
