Learning how to maintain an aircraft takes more than reading a textbook or sitting through a lecture. Aviation maintenance students need to understand how aircraft systems work, but they also need opportunities to work with the components, tools, equipment, and systems they will encounter in the field.

That is where training aids come in.

At Hallmark University’s College of Aeronautics, students use a variety of training aids as part of their hands-on aviation maintenance education. These resources give students opportunities to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in a practical setting.

What Are Aviation Training Aids?

Aviation training aids are equipment, components, systems, models, and other resources used to help students understand and practice aviation maintenance concepts.

Some lessons are easier to understand when a student can see the system in front of them rather than looking at a diagram in a textbook. Others require students to actually perform a task, inspect a component, troubleshoot a system, or use a tool.

Training aids help bridge that gap.

They give students a chance to learn by doing while instructors can demonstrate proper procedures, answer questions, and provide feedback along the way.

Aircraft and Aircraft Components

One of the most valuable training aids for aviation maintenance students is an actual aircraft or aircraft component.

Working with real aviation equipment gives students the opportunity to see how individual parts fit together and how different systems interact. Students can practice inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and other procedures in an environment that more closely reflects the work they will encounter as aviation maintenance technicians.

This type of hands-on experience is especially important for students preparing for careers as Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) technicians.

Tools and Maintenance Equipment

Training aids are not limited to large pieces of equipment.

The tools used by aviation maintenance technicians are an important part of the learning process as well. Students need to know how to select the right tool for a task, use it correctly, and follow proper maintenance procedures.

Precision measurement tools, electrical testing equipment, inspection equipment, and other specialized tools allow students to practice the same types of skills they will need when working on aircraft.

Learning how to use these tools correctly is just as important as knowing what they are called.

Learn Aviation Maintenance by Doing

Aviation maintenance is a hands-on profession, and learning the field should be hands-on, too.

The training aids used at Hallmark University’s College of Aeronautics give students opportunities to work with aviation equipment, practice maintenance procedures, and develop the practical skills that complement their classroom education.

For students considering a career in aircraft maintenance, understanding how an aircraft works is only part of the equation. Learning how to work on one is where the classroom knowledge starts to come together.
